Jack Antwis, Footballer

Jack Antwis was born in Frodsham on 23 May 1898.

His father was Peter Antwis, born in Kingsley in 1876.

His mother was Mary, known as Polly, nee Lightfoot.

In the 1901 census Peter, Mary and 2 year old Jack were at the home of Mary's father, George Lightfoot in Blakemere Lane, Runcorn. Mary's mother, Esther, is not present.

By 1911 the family was at 26 Ellesmere Street Runcorn. By then Peter and Mary had 3 children - Jack, Doris (born 1903) and George Harold (born 1908).

 

Jack Antwis had the distinction of playing for Wrexham F.C. in 1914, who were then competing in the Birmingham and District Artisans League. He made three appearances in March 1914, as a centre forward, against Wellington, which they won 3-0 at home, a loss 0-1 against Shrewsbury, and a 0-0 draw with Worcester. He went on to play for Wrexham, in the Welsh Cup Final, on March 28th, as a centre forward, against Llanelli, at the Vetch Field, Swansea in front of 15,000 fans. The result was a 0-0 draw and the replay in the April of 1914 finished with Wrexham winning

3-0 at Oswestry in front of 3,690 fans.

He served in the Cheshire Regiment in World War 1.

He married Ethel Inett on his birthday, 23rd May in 1920 in Frodsham.
